It’s an interesting time for Leeds United, who are preparing for Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival in England over the weekend.

Leeds appointed Bielsa last week, with his arrival set to coincide with the start of pre-season.

Bielsa will also be looking to kick-start Leeds’ summer transfer business, with the squad he is inheriting needing plenty of work.

Leeds have targets identified, with Kyle Bartley a top summer target for the Whites.

However, a deal to bring £3.15m-rated Bartley, who spent time on-loan at Elland Road under Garry Monk, back to the club hasn’t progressed.

Here at FLW, we believe that Bielsa’s arrival will spell the end of Leeds’ interest in Bartley, with the 62-year-old likely to pursue other targets.

It is expected that one of Bielsa’s key changes will come in the formation Leeds play, with many hoping to see his famous 3-3-1-3 system used.

Of course, a switch to a three-man defence will see more centre-backs on show, but Bielsa is likely to prefer a defender comfortable on the ball.

Bartley is good on the ball, but Bielsa has a reputation of pushing midfielders back into his defence, as he looks to bring fluidity to how his side plays out from the back.

Adam Forshaw could be one man deployed in a back-three, whilst Conor Shaughnessy is another that could benefit from Bielsa’s arrival.

Shaughnessy broke onto the scene at Elland Road last season, filling in at centre-back. The youngster was brought up in midfield, but looked comfortable in defence last season. He could be one man Bielsa turns to in a three-man defence.

Bielsa will bring other defenders in, with Juan Foyth one man already linked.

Foyth, 20, is a Tottenham centre-back, who already has Champions League experience under his belt. Bielsa could look to use his relationship with Mauricio Pochettino to get a deal over the line and improve his defensive options.

It could be that type of foreign quality that Bielsa targets, rather than a domestic centre-back like Bartley.

Bartley is a popular figure at Elland Road, who had a huge impact under Monk during his spell on-loan.

However, following Bielsa’s arrival, we could be about to see the end of Leeds’ pursuit of the 27-year-old.
