Leeds United’s move for top target thrown into doubt as Premier League club circle

Leeds United face a battle to land Abel Hernandez after Premier League new boys Cardiff City entered the race for his signature, according to Football Insider.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock wants a new striker to bolster his attacking options ahead of the Premier League campaign and Hernandez has been identified as a potential target.

The 27-year-old is available on a free transfer after deciding not to sign a new contract at Hull City and his current deal expires at the end of June.

Cardiff are eyeing up a swoop for the soon-to-be free agent, who is firmly on Leeds’ radar this summer.

The Whites have been strongly linked with the Uruguay international as they look to improve their striker options.

Hernandez is a proven goal scorer at Championship level as he netted eight goals in eight starts for the Tigers last term after recovering from a serious long-term injury.

In his last full season in the second tier, the former Palermo striker guided Hull to promotion, scoring 20 league goals in the 2015/16 season.

His record in the Premier League has been less impressive, though, as he has only only managed 8 goals in 49 games.

Nevertheless, Cardiff are ready to take a punt on him, casting doubt over a potential move to Elland Road.

The Verdict

Whether Hernandez can resist the lure of the Premier League at such a vital stage in his career remains to be seen.

If Leeds can get him, it’s a major coup and he will be the man to provide the firepower needed up front to launch a promotion bid.

If not, they will have to turn to other striker options but a free transfer for Hernandez is surely the best move they can manage.
