Leeds United’s quest to sign Matthew Pennington has been cast into doubt, with it understood that Everton are keen for the centre-back to go out on-loan to a club where he is guaranteed first-team football.

Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post has confirmed that Leeds have an offer on the table for Pennington, but then cast doubt over the deal, suggesting that Everton aren’t keen on their player heading to Leeds to be back-up to Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson.

Pennington, who is also attracting interest from Wigan Athletic, spent the last 12 months on-loan at Leeds, before returning to Everton.

During last year’s spell at Elland Road, Pennington, 23, made 24 appearances during a mixed time with Leeds.

Leeds are looking to finalise their summer business, with Marcelo Bielsa already adding five new faces to his playing squad.

A centre-back is on the club’s radar, with Cooper and Jansson Leeds’ only recognised options at this stage.

Gaetano Berardi partnered Cooper on Sunday afternoon, with Jansson rested for Leeds’ 3-1 victory over Stoke City at Elland Road.

The Swede only returned from his summer break a week before the season.

It remains to be see if he is back in contention for this weekend’s clash with Derby County.

The Verdict

Pennington would be a good back-up for Leeds, who do need an extra body at centre-back.

Last season, we saw good and bad moments from Pennington, but Bielsa could help him improve.

However, it’s not difficult to understand Everton’s stance here. They need their player playing regular football.
