Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear has backed the claim made by EFL chairman Rick Parry that promotion and relegation was the shared expectation of both the Premier League and EFL.

It has been nearly two months since English football was first suspended and it seems we may be moving towards a decision over if, how, and when the 2019/20 campaign will be concluded.

The Athletic has reported that League One and League Two could be ended and decided using a weighted points-per-game system, while it is understood the Premier League is set to meet over 'Project Restart'.

It is thought that a growing number of top-flight sides are keen on removing relegation this season, which could cause issues for Leeds, who look on course to secure promotion.

Parry addressed the issue in midweek and suggested, via the Yorkshire Post, that there was a continued expectation that three sides would be relegated from the Premier League and promoted from the Championship.

In his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Kinnear echoed the EFL chairman's claims and suggested the club have confidence in the EFL, Premier League, and FA to make the right call.

He said: "Earlier this week, EFL chairman, Rick Parry spoke to the Department of Digital Culture, Media and Sport committee on the plans for football to return, and confidently reasserted both the EFL and Premier Leagues position that relegation and promotion was the shared expectation however the leagues are destined to be finished.

"We believe that this principle is immutable and have confidence in both leagues and the FA governance to uphold its integrity."

Leeds are top of the Championship and have a healthy seven-point cushion over the play-offs with nine games remaining.

The Verdict

Parry's comments in midweek will have boosted the hopes of Leeds fans, particularly after some of the rumoured proposals that have been circling recently.

It's no surprise to see Kinnear put his backing behind the EFL chief and his confidence in the English footballing authorities will likely provide the Elland Road faithful with additional hope.

That said, what the final decision will be on the 2019/20 campaign and the Whites' Premier League promotion remains unclear.
