Leeds United have had their fair share of transfer success stories as well as failures over the years.

The Whites, who remain the biggest club in the Championship in the eyes of many due to their fanbase and history, are currently reinvigorated under manager Marcelo Bielsa, and narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League last season.

This summer then is bound to be a big one for Leeds, who have convinced Bielsa to stay put and will now be looking to back their manager with the appropriate signings to boost the squad.

With a host of players already linked, one of the more surprising names to be linked with a move to the club is Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon, who is reportedly wanted by the Whites according to a report from Italian news outlet, Corrier della Sera.

And if Leeds can pull this one off, as well as being simply speechless on a personal level, it could well go down as the greatest signing ever in the Championship.

This might sound strange to read given Buffon is now 41 and pushing into the final year or two of his career, but things like this do not happen every day, and Buffon is a true star of the footballing world who has achieved so much over his 20 plus year career.

While it's obvious that he would solve the goalkeeping issues Leeds have at the moment, it would bring so much more to Elland Road than just another 'keeper.

Buffon is simply put, world class, and only last season kept goal for French giants Paris St Germain after leaving Juventus after a two decade spell with the Azzuri.

The Championship has, in recent times, seen a spike and a boom in terms of money spent and big fees, but even with this being a free transfer, it would change the landscape of the league.

Not just for Leeds either it has to be said. Buffon's arrival would cast eyes onto the Championship who might never have been bothered to take an interest before, such is his magnetism and star power.

It does of course remain nothing but a murmur at the moment, but if Leeds can pull this signing off and add one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, then we would truly be witnessing the finest signing a Championship club has ever made.
