There may be 13 fixtures remaining in the Championship, but things are really starting to heat up in the second tier.

The hunt for automatic promotion is reach fever pitch, while the battle to sneak into the play-off positions is also getting more exciting by the week.

Add to the the battle to avoid the drop and there's plenty still to be decided as the end of the season approaches.

Thankfully, we may just have an insight into how the rest of the campaign could play out.

Sports statistics website Five Thirty Eight have forecasted how the Championship table will look at the end of the season based on a detailed algorithm.

[freshpress-poll ]

Predictions are made based on each team receiving a Sports Power Index (SPI) which rates teams based on an offensive rating (based on how many goals they would score against an average team), and a defensive rating (based on how many they'd concede against the average team).

The results are pretty interesting.

According to Five Thirty Eight, West Brom and Leeds United will secure automatic promotion - with the Baggies taking the Championship crown.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are predicted to finish with a four point advantage over Brentford, who will join Fulham Nottingham Forest and Preston North End to battle it out for play-off glory.

Agonisingly, Bristol City are forecasted to miss out on the top six on goal difference.

At the other end of the table, the season will end in misery for current bottom three Wigan Athletic, Luton Town and Barnsley who will drop to League One.

The verdict

While predictions such as this should be taken with a pinch of salt, it certainly raises some interesting points.

Five Thirty Eight are renowned for taking a detailed statistical view of the league meaning that all of their predictions are based on number crunching and hard fact.

Of course, football isn't played on a spreadsheet and so it doesn't account for the random nature of the game that we all know and love.

That said, I'm sure the likes of West Brom and Leeds United won't be complaining if these predicted standings prove to be accurate.
