Leeds United are considering a move for Nottingham Forest centre-back Yohan Benalouane in the summer as they look to strengthen their defensive options.

The Tunisian international only arrived at the City Ground in January under current boss Martin O'Neill but he has made an instant impression.

Supporters have taken to his no-nonsense style and the Reds defence has been tight on the whole since his arrival.

And, such form has not gone unnoticed, with Guardian reporter Ed Aarons revealing that the 31-year-old is a target for the Whites.

Benalouane only signed an 18-month deal with Forest so he will be approaching the final year of his contract in the summer.

However, a move to Elland Road won't be straightforward.

That's because not only will Forest be desperate to keep hold of the defender but Aarons also states that Cardiff are monitoring the player.

Given that, a lot could depend on what happens in the coming months, with Leeds looking for promotion and the Welsh outfit trying to preserve their top-flight status.

The former Leicester man will still be hoping he can help Forest into the Premier League, with O'Neill's men currently three points behind the top six.

The Verdict

Benalouane would be a good solid option for Leeds to have around the squad as he is an old-school defender and would give the side a physicality.

Whether he is an upgrade on the current two is open to debate but if they remain in the Championship he has proven he can do a job.

In the Premier League they'd probably need better but as a cheap, short-term signing they could do a lot worse.
