Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell has been described as a player with ‘fabulous ability’, but Danny Mills has urged Leeds United not to spend money on him this week.

Leeds are back in the Premier League now, but their attention in the transfer window has reportedly been back on the Championship.

They were linked with a £15m move for Cantwell over the weekend, as Marcelo Bielsa looks to put the finishing touches to his squad.

Quiz: Have Norwich City ever loaned out any of these 9 players?

For Mills, though, whilst Cantwell is a good player, he doesn’t feel the 22-year-old is needed at Elland Road despite his eight goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

“That could be a possibility for Leeds,” Mills told Football Insider when quizzed on the links to Cantwell.

“He has fabulous ability but if you are Leeds or Bielsa I would be thinking, ‘Do I need him?’

“Does he really add to what Leeds have already got in those positions right now? They have Mateusz Klich, Rodrigo, Costa, Harrison and others.

“It would make the midfield quite crowded and I think the money would be better off spent in other areas.”

Cantwell started Norwich’s opening two fixtures of the Championship season, helping Daniel Farke’s side to four points from meetings with Huddersfield Town and Preston North End.

However, he missed out on Sunday against AFC Bournemouth as speculation surrounding his future rumbled on.

Farke’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat on the South Coast, with the Cherries handing them their first defeat of the season.

The Verdict

Leeds do need another body in the midfield, but it’s maybe worth them looking for someone a little more robust that Cantwell.

There’s no denying the Norwich man’s ability, but he’s maybe a little bit too lightweight in the midfield for Leeds. They need a strong runner to complement Mateusz Klich and someone with a little bit of presence.

It’ll be interesting to see if any of Leeds’ Premier League rivals make a move for Cantwell in the coming days. If not, Norwich will be delighted to retain him.
