Noel Whelan believes that Marcelo Bielsa would convert Bright Osayi-Samuel into a wing-back if the player made the move to Leeds United this summer.

The Queens Park Rangers winger is a wanted man heading into the summer, after a standout campaign for Mark Warburton's side.

The 22-year-old has scored six goals and added eight assists this season, but with his contract running out next summer, the West London club may look to sell him this summer rather than losing him for free.

Has Kalvin Phillips done these 12 things at Leeds?

Club Brugge have already seen a £3m bid rejected for Osayi-Samuel, with West Brom, Norwich and West Ham being linked with his signature.

Football Insider have also recently claimed that Leeds are interested in signing the QPR man, despite Bielsa having plenty of wide options to choose from already.

But speaking about Osayi-Samuel's potential move to Elland Road, former United player Whelan has tipped Bielsa to convert Osayi-Samuel into a wing-back in order to suit his free-flowing system.

He said: "I saw him play a couple of times and his progression has been very good.

"He has loads of pace and there is a fantastic winger there but I am not so sure we need more wingers. At the right price possibly.

"He could play that wing-back role as well and Leeds will look at that because Marcelo Bielsa likes players that can play multiple positions. He has the athleticism to play that right wing-back role. He is really quick and has pace to burn.

"They rate him very highly at QPR and he was finishing the season strongly."

Leeds often switch to a 3-3-1-3 formation in some games, which sees Jack Harrison and Helder Costa take up the role of wing-backs, something that Whelan believes Osayi-Samuel would be turned into.

The Verdict

It would be quite surprising to see Bielsa change Osayi-Samuel into a wing-back.

He has proven to be one of the best wingers in the division this season, but to play him out of his natural position would make no sense, especially as he would need to hit the ground running at Elland Road.

Saying that, not many would have expected Gjanni Alioski to have been a left-back under Bielsa, but he's pushed an experienced player in Barry Douglas down the pecking order.
