The EFL have today opened an investigation against Leeds United with regards the 'spygate' saga, asking the club to provide their observations of events.

They claim that the decision to send spies to watch Derby County's training session last Thursday ahead of the two sides' clash "contravened the club's charter" that was signed by all EFL clubs in the summer of 2018.

The EFL also say that the decision has been made following Marcelo Bielsa's admission during the pre-match build-up that he was behind the spy who was discovered at the training session.

Leeds beat the Rams 2-0 at Elland Road in a thoroughly convincing display that saw them move four points clear of second-placed Sheffield United.

It remains to be seen what sort of punishment will be levied against the Whites if they are found guilty of breaking EFL regulations, but it is something that is sure to worry the club's fans.

The verdict

Good grief, how overblown can this situation become?

It may be an unsporting move, but the EFL and FA are setting a precedent here for all unsporting behaviour.

Will every dive now be met with an investigation? Every appeal for a corner that is clearly not their's? Each of these situations seeks to gain an advantage, just like spying on a training session.

Get over it, people.
