Leeds United to battle Championship side for Premier League player

Published

Leeds United and Brentford are set for a transfer tussle over Southampton prospect Sam McQueen, the Sun reports on page 60 of its printed edition on Friday.

McQueen played as Southampton kept a clean sheet against Manchester United over the festive period and has made five league appearances for the Saints this season.

He also made three Europa League appearances last season and that level of quality is a definite upgrade on Gaetano Berardi playing out of position on the left of defence.

The Bees, along with Reading, are both also reportedly in the hunt for the Englishman but Leeds will feel they are ahead of them in the race for his signature because they have genuine promotion aspirations.

The Verdict

On paper, McQueen looks perfect for Leeds. Their fans may be put off after Premier League loanee Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s loan move from Manchester United has flattered to deceive but McQueen is a better and more experienced player.

He can also play on the left of midfield, and an another attacking option would not go amiss for Thomas Christiansen.
