Former Scunthorpe, Southampton and Reading manager Nigel Adkins has been in talks with Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino, prompting speculation he could take the manager’s job at Elland Road, according to YEP journalist Phil Hay.
Although Adkins has proven calibre at this level it will come as quite a surprise to most fans, who are still waiting for current head-coach Neil Redfearn to be offered a new deal at Elland Road.
Redfearn has had a strong six months at Leeds United that has seen him save the club from relegation whilst integrating youth from the club’s academy, which he managed before taking the manager’s role.
Redfearn’s current contract ends in June and there has been no suggestion whether he will keep his current role or take his clause of returning to the academy if replaced as boss, with the latter looking less favourable for the Pontefract born coach.
Adkins however has been courted by Cellino with contact between both camps.
The 50 year old has a proven track record at clubs like Scunthorpe and Southampton where he was promoted at both clubs. Adkins has been out of a job since being sacked in December after an unsuccessful spell at Reading.
Questions to whether Adkins is a viable candidate for the current Head Coach position, or if he’s just an option that has been spoken to before Cellino makes his final decision on Redfearn.
