According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are not interested in signing Filip Helander from Bologna this summer.

Reports in the Italian media earlier this week indicated that Leeds were continuing to pursue a move for the Swedish central defender, with hope of him linking up with his fellow countryman, Pontus Jansson.

However, the YEP have quashed those rumours, suggesting that Leeds are not interested in giving Helander a route out of Bologna, where the 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order.

Despite the YEP dismissing Leeds’ links with Helander, they did confirm that the Whites were pursuing three unidentified targets, as they continued to stay tight-lipped on their quest for reinforcements.

It is known that Thomas Christiansen is keen to bolster his options in central defence, where he only has Jansson, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington heading into the Sky Bet Championship season – with Jansson also suspended for Leeds’ opening two fixtures.

Christiansen is also likely to be targeting a natural left-back to fill the void left by Charlie Taylor at Elland Road, as well as another attacking option, as Leeds look to add goals to their team to support last season’s 30-goal hero, Chris Wood.

There is just over a week until the start of the Championship campaign, with Leeds travelling to Bolton Wanderers on August 6th.

The Verdict

This is not unusual from Leeds this summer, with new owner, Andrea Radrizzani, trying to avoid as much speculation as possible during his early days at Elland Road.

The links with Helander show the calibre of defender Leeds could be potentially interested in recruiting before the start of the season, which is exciting for supporters.

For Leeds to stage any push for promotion, it is vital that Christiansen brings in quality and depth to Leeds’ defence, with centre-back and left-back the key areas that need strengthening.
