Leeds United managerial target Matias Almeyda has quit his role as Chivas manager, the Mexican club has confirmed on Twitter.

Chivas have thanked Almeyda for his services to the club and this could open the door for a switch to Leeds.

The Yorkshire Evening Post yesterday revealed that Leeds were keeping their tabs on Almeyda as an alternative should the move for Marcelo Bielsa fall through.

As confirmed by prominent Leeds journalist Adam Pope, Almeyda has left Chivas after failing to agree a way forward with the powers that be at the club.

Bielsa is the first-choice replacement for Paul Heckingbottom at Elland Road but the 62-year-old is stalling on a decision, which has prompted Leeds to consider others too.

Almeyda is a target after impressing at Chivas, winning the Clausura 2017 and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2018 with the Guadalajara based outfit.

Prior to his time in Mexico, the 44-year-old twice won promotion in Argentina, helping both River Plate and Banfield back to the top flight in his home country.

Now that he has left Chivas, Leeds are free to approach him should a move for former Lazio, Marseille, Argentina, Chile and Lille manager Bielsa collapse.

The Verdict

Almeyda is a risk; there is no doubt about that.

Given his track record of winning promotion and trophies, this could just be a genius move but it could also end in disaster.

The Argentine has never played nor managed in England and this is a gamble which could really go either way.
