Leeds United face an anxious wait over Conor Shaughnessy and Matthew Pennington, with the duo struggling with injuries, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post’s, Phil Hay.

With Liam Cooper serving a four-match suspension, Thomas Christiansen was hoping to turn to Shaughnessy and Pennington to fill in alongside Pontus Jansson in central defence, however, both have been struck by injury problems.

Pennington was forced to miss last night’s goalless draw with Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, with Shaughnessy partnering Jansson.

The Irishman was forced from the field inside 10 minutes though, with a serious-looking ankle injury.

Hay has confirmed that the 21-year-old’s setback doesn’t look good, whilst he also mentioned that Pennington will be a doubt for the weekend’s clash with Cardiff City, having picked up a problem in training.

With Cooper still suspended, Jansson is Leeds’ only available defender for Saturday’s visit of Cardiff, but the Swedish colossus moved onto nine bookings last night, meaning he is on the verge of a two-match suspension.

The YEP have this morning confirmed that Leeds aren’t ruling out signing another central defender, due to Cooper’s suspension, injuries and Jansson’s looming ban.

The Verdict

It is a worrying time to be a Leeds United fan, with numbers stretched and the club’s play-off hopes fading fast.

Central defence is such a key area, and Leeds’ lack of bodies there should be a concern for Christiansen, who should now be pushing for reinforcements this month.

Today could be crucial for the Whites.
