Uruguayan prospect Agustin Rogel has turned down the chance to sign for Leeds United, according to reports from his home nation.

According to a report by Uruguayan media outlet Referi, Rogel's agent has confirmed that his client has rejected the opportunity to join Leeds in the Championship.

The 20-year-old currently plays for Nacional, who compete in the Primera Division - the top flight of football in Uruguay.

But the young defender is not being considered for selection at the moment due to his refusal to sign a new contract with the club.

The centre half is out of contract at the end of the season and will become a free agent in the summer, which had sparked the interest of Leeds.

Leeds made an offer to sign the Uruguay under-20 international, who has made an impressive 18 caps for his country's youth team.

The plan was for Leeds to snap him up then loan him out until he obtained a work permit, while offering him a decent pay packet.

But Rogel's agent has now confirmed that the player did not want to make a switch to Elland Road and he has turned down that approach from the Whites.

The Verdict

Rogel is highly-rated in Uruguay, given the fact that he was playing regularly for a top flight club despite his young age. With many international youth caps to his name already, the 20-year-old is seen as a top talent for the future. But moving to England is always tough for a young defender because the league is so much more physical and demanding so perhaps Leeds have dodged a bullet with this one.
