Newcastle United have made Kemar Roofe their number one target this January, according to a report in the Mirror.

Manager Rafa Benitez is still waiting to find out if he'll have funds to spend in the transfer window but if he does, the former Oxford United man is high on his list after impressing at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa.

He's scored 13 goals this season in just 20 appearances having missed most of September through injury. His strike rate has been one of the driving factors in Leeds' climb to the top of the table and their continued promotion aspirations.

Leeds are currently three points clear of Norwich at the top of the table, five points the gap between them and third place West Brom. If that placing and form is to continue, they'll be keen to retain the services of Roofe.

The 25-year old move to Elland Road from Oxford in 2016 for an undisclosed seven-figure fee after initially starting out as a trainee at West Brom.

The Verdict

Roofe is bound to be attracting interest, you don't hit 13 goals in 20 matches and not catch the eye of scouts from the Premier League.

The question is, where would he be better off? Moving to Newcastle where he might drop out of the top flight in six months time, or staying put where he could achieve the dream without any upheaval.

I think he'd be foolish to move.
