Luke Ayling has described Kalvin Phillips' red card offence as 'a stupid tackle'.

The Leeds United midfielder was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Queens Park Rangers defender Geoff Cameron in the closing stages of Saturday's 1-0 defeat.

Phillips took to social media after the game to apologise for the 'badly-timed tackle', but will now face a three-match ban as a result.

Ayling spoke of the red card after the game and said that there's now an opportunity for someone to step up and claim a place in Marcelo Bielsa's side

Speaking after the game, as quoted by the Daily Star, Ayling said: "It'll be a huge miss for us.

"I said after to him, it is a stupid tackle, it is a red card.

"So he will have to sit out for three games now and the other players are going to have to step up.

"Maybe some players that have been injured might be able to come back and have some game time and we are going to have to find a different player to play in there."

The verdict

It's hard to argue with Luke Ayling's assessment of the challenge.

Emotions were clearly running high on a frustrating afternoon for Leeds United, but the young midfielder should know better.

Let's just hope that his absence doesn't prove costly for the Whites in the coming weeks.
