The Championship table is beginning to take shape after a hectic start, with Leeds United and Middlesbrough the sides currently leading the way.

Such is the nature of the division, it's still far too early to say who will be occupying those promotion positions come May, but we are starting to get a clearer understanding of what each side is capable of.

As well as that, as we approach the ten-game mark in the division, we are getting an idea of how individuals are performing.

Whether that's certain players improving on last season or new signings making an immediate impact, the key players have been making a difference for the side since the opening day.

And, here we will look at TWO of the outstanding defenders of the Championship season so far, based on the ratings provided by WhoScored, with both significantly improving from their performances over recent seasons...

The Leeds skipper has been the best defender in the Championship so far, according to the ratings, and in fairness to the 27-year-old, he has played very well.

Whilst Marcelo Bielsa's side are renowned for their stylish approach, they have been solid defensively, with only two sides conceding fewer goals.

Cooper has been crucial to that, with his leadership another positive attribute. Furthermore, he has weighed in with two goals.

It won't surprise many to see a Middlesbrough player make the list, as they have been incredible defensively this season.

Tony Pulis' men have conceded just three goals in nine games with those foundations proving to be the reason behind their second-place position.

Shotton has been an ever-present, whether it's in a back five or as a regular right-back. He has clearly impressed.
