It was an indifferent season for Leeds United during 2017/18 and boss Paul Heckingbottom will be under real pressure to hit the ground running when the campaign gets back underway in August.

The ex-Barnsley manager hasn't exactly covered himself in glory since taking charge in February, winning just four of the 16 games that he has overseen in the Whites' dugout.

In order to make sure of a positive start to next season Heckingbottom will need some top class recruits to bolster his squad and a former West Ham United defender could be just the tonic for the under-fire boss.

James Collins was released following six years at the Hammers and he will represent a quality signing for any Championship club that has bold ambitions.

Some of the West Ham faithful were shocked to see the 34-year-old ousted out of the club given his defensive qualities and those attributes could be perfect for a Leeds side that struggled to keep clean sheets last season.

Collins would probably jump at the chance to aid Leeds in their quest to win promotion to the Premier League and he could form a perfect partnership with fan favourite Pontus Jansson at the heart of Heckingbottom's back four.

The former Wales central defender boasts years of top flight experience and it is hard to imagine Leeds signing anyone possessing more experience than the veteran this summer.
