We have just witnessed another exciting weekend of football, with a number of clubs continuing their fine start to the 2017/18 campaign, whilst others have picked up valuable points at an early stage of the season.

Shrewsbury Town remain the Football League’s only unbeaten side, after Exeter City suffered a 2-0 defeat to Coventry City on Saturday – knocking them off the top of the League Two table.

Whilst in the race for the Premier League, Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City all gave themselves breathing space at the top of the Championship, with the trio all recording victories over the course of the weekend.

Here at FLW, we have looked at some of the weekend’s top performers and put together a Team of the Weekend.

Goalkeeper:

Stephen Bywater – Burton Albion

Bywater helped Burton to a valuable point on the road at Queens Park Rangers, providing Nigel Clough’s side with a solid defensive performance at Loftus Road, which helped the Brewers bounce back from their Carabao Cup mauling against Manchester United.

Defence:

Cyrus Christie – Middlesbrough

The right-back helped to dig Garry Monk’s side out of trouble at Fulham on Saturday afternoon, popping up with an equalising goal late in the contest. Christie is proving to be an excellent addition for the Teessiders.

Rory McArdle – Scunthorpe United

McArdle has been a rock for Scunthorpe so far this season, and his performance against Portsmouth over the weekend helped the Irons to maintain their fantastic start. A key member of the tightest defence in League One.

Jake Buxton – Burton Albion

Buxton was another of Burton’s defence that impressed against QPR, with the 32-year-old putting in a real captain’s performance to help Clough’s men to another valuable point.

Joe Bennett – Cardiff City

Bennett put in another excellent performance on the left side of Cardiff’s defence, helping Neil Warnock’s side keep the pace with Leeds and Wolves at the top of the Championship.

Midfield

David Brooks – Sheffield United

Chris Wilder used Brooks as a second striker in Sunday’s Steel City derby due to Sheffield United’s long list of injuries, and the youngster was immense against the Blades’ city rivals, lighting up the derby with an impressive piece of skill against Jack Hunt in the second-half.

Erhun Oztumer – Walsall

Oztumer continues to light up League One. The midfielder grabbed another goal and assist in Saturday’s victory over Oxford United.

Jorge Grant – Notts County

Grant grabbed his fifth goal of the League Two season in County’s convincing victory over Lincoln on Saturday. The on-loan midfielder has been key to the club’s early season form, which sees Kevin Nolan’s side top the table.

Kalvin Phillips – Leeds United

The young Leeds midfielder continues to keep Ronaldo Vieira out of the team, and his goal on Saturday was key to helping his side to victory over Ipswich. His late runs from midfield are becoming a trademark.

Attack

Leon Clarke – Sheffield United

Clarke’s brace in the Steel City derby will have delighted Chris Wilder. The experienced striker stepped up in the absence of Billy Sharp to guide the Blades to a memorable victory.

Kieffer Moore – Rotherham United

Moore’s second-half brace helped Rotherham on their way to an impressive 5-1 victory on Saturday against Oldham Athletic. If he can continue his goalscoring form, there is no reason why the Millers can’t challenge for the play-offs.
