Phil Hay, the Yorkshire Post’s chief football writer has revealed that Leeds United are set to release midfielder Toumani Diagouraga after only one and a half years at the club.

The French midfielder signed for Leeds in January of 2016 from Brentford but has since been sent out on loan to Ipswich which saw similarly poor performances as he only played 12 times for the club.

It has been a busy transfer window in terms of players coming into the Yorkshire club with 11 new faces arriving in Thomas Christiansen’s side.

One of those players, Vurnon Anita, is also a defensive midfielder and the club promoted U23 player Conor Shaughnessy to the first team in the same position as well.

With Leeds hoping to push on for promotion this season, there is no room for passengers in Christiansen’s team which makes it all the more unsurprising that Diagouraga’s time at the club could soon be up.

The Verdict

This one is a no brainer.

Toumani Diagouraga hasn’t had the best of times since joining Leeds.

He isn’t necessarily a bad player but Leeds can and have done a lot better by bringing in Anita and promoting Shaughnessy in the defensive midfield position.

The 30-year-old only has a year left on his contract so it makes sense to just get him off the wage bill now and save the club some money.

He was never going to feature for them this season and now the former Brentford player can begin his search for a new club.
