Leeds United are set to officially release Eunan O'Kane when his contract expires in the summer, as per Football Insider.

It has been a torrid couple of years for O'Kane, who hasn't featured in a competitive game of football since September 2018 due to injury.

O'Kane joined Leeds from AFC Bournemouth in the summer of 2016, and has since made 58 appearances for the Whites across all competitions.

But the Irishman joined Luton on loan at the start of the 2018/19 season, before breaking his leg in September and missing the remainder of the campaign.

In January 2020, O'Kane joined Luton on an 18-month loan deal, but is yet to feature for the Hatters in any competition because of further injury setbacks.

O'Kane, who is still on Leeds' books, is set to be released at the end of this season when his contract expires, with the Yorkshire club having no plans to extend his deal, perhaps unsurprisingly.

It remains to be seen whether Luton go in for him on a permanent deal at the end of this season due to his injury problems.

The Verdict

What a nightmare of a two years it has been for O'Kane.

He hasn't been able to feature since September 2018, and it must have had such a toll on him mentally whilst sitting on the sidelines.

Hopefully he's edging closer to a first-team return, but does it make sense to extend his deal and make a permanent move if he isn't going to feature too often?

I'm not sure it makes sense.
