Leeds United could be set to keep Conor Shaughnessy, despite the defender looking set to join Hearts on loan for the remainder of this year's campaign according to Leeds Live.

Edinburgh Live had previously reported that Shaughnessy was all set to join the Scottish side on loan until the end of the season.

It's no surprise to see the Irish youngster eyeing a move elsewhere this month, as he has fallen well down the pecking order in Marcelo Bielsa's plans.

The defender made nine appearances in total for the Whites last season but is yet to make a single appearance for Leeds in this year's campaign.

But he could be set to be involved in the first-team for Leeds' FA match against fellow Championship side, QPR at Loftus Road on Sunday.

His potential recall to the side could occur due to Kalvin Phillips being suspended for the game, which leaves Marcelo Bielsa with a lack of options in the centre of defence.

Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi are both still sidelined as they recover from injuries, and it leaves the Leeds boss with Pontuss Jansson as his only recognised central defender against the Hoops.

It remains to be seen as to whether Shaughnessy will be involved at the weekend, but if he isn't, it surely all but confirms his loan deal to Hearts this month.

The Verdict:

This is an interesting move by Leeds.

I wouldn't have expected Shaughnessy to have a future at Leeds after being well down the pecking order in Marcelo Bielsa's side.

But if he is given the opportunity in Bielsa's starting XI in the near future, he will have to make it count, otherwise he could be sent out on loan to get regular first-team football under his belt for the remainder of the season.
