Leeds United have asked the FA to explain why Charlie Austin avoided a ban for his recent outburst at a match official after Pontus Jansson was hit with a suspension.

The Swedish centre-back was heavily critical of referee Jeremy Simpson for his performance in the Whites 1-1 draw with Brentford, describing it as a 'robbery' after a controversial penalty was awarded to the Bees.

Jansson was subsequently handed a one-match ban that the club reluctantly accepted.

However, Southampton forward Austin managed to avoid any punishment despite his remarkable post-match interview against Watford recently, here he claimed the officials had 'cost them two points'.

And, the Yorkshire Evening Post have revealed that the Championship side are seeking a proper explanation from the FA on how the two incidents differ.

The report also states how Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear addressed the issue in the matchday programme for today's game against Bristol City.

"While Pontus receive a fine and a one-match ban, Charlie Austin did not even face a regulatory commission.

"On reviewing the transcripts it was difficult to identify a difference in the nature or vehemence of the comments (with the possible exception of Pontus’ erroneous use of a playground expletive)."

The FA had initially stated that Jansson questioned the integrity of the official whereas Austin didn't.

The Verdict

This is completely understandable from Leeds as it was ridiculous to see Austin escape action after Jansson did.

It's double standards from the FA as Austin's rant was hugely critical of the ref and it will be interesting to see how they respond.

Ultimately though, nothing can be changed now but it could set an example moving forward.
