It is unlikely that we will see Leeds United part with significant cash for Andrea Petagna this summer, despite reports yesterday claiming the Whites had bid €15m for the striker.

Leeds have been quite conservative with their dealings so far this summer, with Jack Harrison, Jack Clarke, Ben White and Helder Costa all arriving on loan deals. However, the Costa deal will be made permanent next summer for a significant fee.

And, Leeds Live note that the layout on Costa means that Leeds will not be going big on any other targets as they look to stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play, ahead of another season outside the Premier League.

Reports from Italy yesterday had suggested that Leeds were looking to do a deal for Petagna, with €15m on the table.

Petagna is currently with SPAL in Serie A, after triggering a permanent move to the side he spent last season with. The 24-year-old struck 16 goals to keep his current side in the Italian top-flight whilst on loan from Atalanta.

Leeds will begin their 2019/20 Championship campaign against Bristol City this coming Sunday, but will be without last season’s top goalscorer, Kemar Roofe, who is out with an ankle injury.

The Verdict

When the reports broke that Leeds were going big on Petagna, many will have viewed them with raised eyebrows.

Under Andrea Radrizzani, Leeds’ style hasn’t been to splash that kind of cash, with the transfer process very measured at Elland Road under the Italian.

With big money set to go out for Costa, Leeds were never going to be bringing in a £10m+ player late in the window, with loans far more likely at this stage.
