Bristol City winger Callum O’Dowda is unlikely to sign a new deal with the Robins before the end of the season, potentially handing a boost to Leeds United, report Bristol Live.
The Whites were apparently interested in bringing the 23-year-old to the club back in January but a deal was never finalised although this latest news could persuade Marcelo Bielsa to revisit the move.
O’Dowda was named as an alternative to Swansea’s Daniel James as a winger the club were interested in bringing in during January, although the Welshman was always their first choice.
In the end, no new wide man arrived at Elland Road with a deal for James falling through right at the last minute in January.
But the O’Dowda news will be a boost to Bielsa in his mission to strengthen the Whites.
The Irishman has been key in Lee Johnson’s side’s rise into the Championship play-offs, scoring three times and assisting five more.
He will have a year remaining on his current deal in the summer and, after this latest revelation, Leeds will be confident of landing him for a reasonable fee.
This certainly throws another element into the Whites’ wing drama.
Until now it looked like a deal for James would just be revisited in the summer but if O’Dowda also takes Bielsa’s fancy then the situation becomes a lot murkier.
Is James now more likely to sign a new Swansea deal? Or will it make him more likely to push for a move?
