It has been revealed that Illan Meslier’s permanent signature will cost Leeds United a £5m transfer fee.

Leeds took Meslier on loan from Lorient at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, with the youngster arriving as Kiko Casilla’s reserve and replacing Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the club’s wider squad.

After a long period as Casilla’s understudy, Meslier debuted for Leeds in their 1-0 defeat at Arsenal in January. Now, he’s serving as the club’s first choice goalkeeper due to Casilla’s eight-game ban.

And, after two clean sheets in the Championship and an impressive transition into the first-team at Elland Road, there’s plenty of hope that Meslier will commit to Leeds on a permanent basis in the summer.

According to The Telegraph, the Frenchman’s signature will cost just £5m, with Leeds planning to push ahead with the deal in a bid to fight off any Premier League rivals in the transfer window.

Meslier’s two Championship appearances came pre-EFL postponement, with the 20-year-old keeping clean sheets in the wins over Hull City and Huddersfield Town, two results that saw Leeds back to the top of the Championship table.

The Verdict

£5m for Meslier is going to be a steal and Leeds need to get the deal wrapped up as quickly as possible.

The goalkeeper is a French youth international and in the English market, he will be worth a hell of a lot more than £5m.

His performances only convince you further, with Meslier destined for the top.
