Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell is someone that Noel Whelan would like to see Leeds United sign.

Leeds have been linked with a move for Cantwell over the last couple of weeks, but nothing has materialised just yet and the club’s focus was seemingly on last night’s European deadline.

However, there was no movement on signing a midfielder of Cantwell’s ilk, leaving Leeds short of options should anything happen to Mateusz Klich.

For Whelan, who works as a Leeds pundit for the BBC, he’d love to see the Whites make a move to sign Cantwell.

He told Football Insider: “He’s exactly the type of player who would fit right into the way we play and our style.

“Really exciting, young prospect, it seems like he’s getting better and better when I see him playing at Norwich and I just think if he came to Elland Road, that would be your number 10 sorted straight away.

“He’s busy, he gets on the ball, he’s brave, he can dribble, he’s got fantastic feet and fantastic vision. I think he would fit straight into the side, the way we play and the style of play and he’s exciting.

“I would love him to come to Elland Road.”

Cantwell scored six goals and registered two assists for Daniel Farke’s Norwich side in the Premier League last season. However, the performances of the England youth international were not enough to prevent the Canaries from slipping out of the top-flight.

Farke had Cantwell in his starting line-up against Huddersfield Town on the opening day of the Championship season and then again against Preston North End.

However, as speculation surrounds the midfielder’s future, he was left out against AFC Bournemouth and Derby County. Norwich suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats.

The Verdict

Leeds’ focus will now turn to the domestic market if Marcelo Bielsa wants to sign a midfielder.

Cantwell is player that’s a mix between a No.8 and a No.10, so does fit the bill in terms of what Leeds need.

Ultimately, for this deal to go through a lot is going to depend on Leeds’ finances, whether they genuinely want Cantwell and Norwich’s valuation.

So many hurdles need to be overcome.
