Everton are set to make a decision on Matthew Pennington shortly with Leeds United among the clubs interested in signing him on loan.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Leeds are pushing hard to re-sign Pennington on loan again for the upcoming campaign but face competition from Wigan Athletic.

Nixon tweeted: "LEEDS. Might want/need Pennington on loan more than Wigan. Everton to decide very shortly."

The Whites currently have few options at centre-half with Sweden international Pontus Jansson competing with Liam Cooper and Conor Shaughnessy for the starting spots.

With Marcelo Bielsa preferring to play three central defenders, Leeds need to bring in at least one more player in that position.

Pennington has been lined up for a surprise return to Elland Road on another loan deal, after playing 24 games for the club last season.

Wigan are competing with Leeds for the 23-year-old, who has also spent time on loan with Walsall and Coventry City in his career.

Pennington has played nine games for Everton's first-team, scoring his only goal against rivals Liverpool, and he signed a new contract this summer.

The Verdict

Pennington had a poor loan spell at Leeds last time and the fans will not be excited by this signing.

After missing out on Kyle Bartley and John Egan, Leeds fans will be underwhelmed with the arrival of Pennington.

The former England youth international adds an extra face at the back but there are better options for Leeds.
