Leeds United have reportedly stepped up their interest to sign Brentford midfielder Lewis Macleod, according to reports from The Sun.

The 24-year old, who is also wanted by Steven Gerrard's Rangers, is out of contract in the summer at Griffin Park, having made 42 appearances for the West London club since his arrival from Ibrox three years ago.

However, with Gerrard keen to lure the midfielder back to Ibrox, Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly stepped up his interest in Macleod - viewing the Scottish star as the ideal replacement for Samu Saiz.

The Spanish playmaker is set to undergo a medical at La Liga side Getafe, with news recently surfacing that the 27-year old wants to leave Elland Road, a declaration in which has shocked the Yorkshire club.

Macleod has been one of the better players for Brentford as Thomas Frank's men continue to slip down the Championship table, producing three assists from the heart of midfield.

Leeds currently sit at the top of the Championship - six points clear of 3rd position after a 1-0 victory at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

This could be a fantastic signing for Leeds.

Whilst Brentford slip down the table, there's no way that they will want Macleod to leave on a free next summer, so they may want to cash in whilst he's under contract.

Bielsa's recruitment has been spot on this season, and Macleod could be a superb addition for Leeds.
