Ipswich Town will be hoping Leeds United pull off a particular transfer this summer that could benefit them financially.

Matt Clarke has been linked with a move to Elland Road by The Times, who rate the defender at £4million.

The defender moved to Portsmouth in 2016 having made just four appearances for the Tractor Boys.

The 22-year-old has starred at Fratton Park since his arrival and was immense in their Checkatrade Trophy win this past weekend.

His progress as reportedly alerted the eyes of those in charge of player recruitment at Leeds who could make a move for the defender in the summer.

If Marcelo Bielsa was to agree on the move and get the ball rolling, it could benefit the League One-bound club no-end.

The East Anglian Daily Times is reporting that Town didn’t allow Clarke to go without inserting a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal with Pompey, which could net them £800,000 if the defender is sold for the reported value.

The verdict

This could be a massive boost for Ipswich who will miss out on a few million pounds of television revenue once dropping to League One.

It may only be around £800,000 – but it is better than nothing and will be a welcome boost after such a nightmare season.

They just better hope he leaves Portsmouth and for more money that has been touted around to increase their windfall further.

It’s a waiting game to see if he does leave but it Clarke does, it would have been a clever clause to insert into his deal when going to Portsmouth.
