Leeds United are keen on Wigan attacking midfielder Nick Powell, who is out of contract with the Championship club in the summer.

The 25-year-old was the star performer for Paul Cook's men last season as they secured promotion back to the second-tier.

And, even though injury has hindered his progress this season, Powell still has six goals and six assists in the current campaign.

However, his long-term future seems to be away from the Latics as he approaches the final few months of his deal, with Football Insider reporting that the Whites are monitoring the player.

A win for Leeds on Saturday lifted them to second in the league so Premier League football looks a real possibility at Elland Road next season and the update claims that Powell will be a target no matter what division Marcelo Bielsa's side are in.

The technically-gifted player began his career at Crewe before sealing a high-profile move to Manchester United as a teenager but he only managed nine appearances whilst at Old Trafford over a four year spell.

The Verdict

On a free transfer this would be a great bit of business for Leeds as Powell has so much quality and is starting to fulfil the potential many recognise he has.

After losing Samuel Saiz it makes sense that the Yorkshire outfit are looking for a number ten and Powell fits the bill.

The only issue is that there is sure to be a lot of interest in the player, although Leeds will be an attractive option for him.
