Marcus Antonsson is the latest player to be on the verge of leaving Leeds United, with a move back to Sweden to link up with Malmo looking on the cards.

According to Swedish media outlet, Expressen, Antonsson has been back in Sweden for a medical with Malmo, with his move away from Leeds now looking a formality.

Leeds moved to sign Antonsson from Kalmar back in the summer of 2016, with the striker agreeing a three-year deal at Elland Road.

However, the 27-year-old struggled to make an impact at Elland Road during his first 12 months with the club.

He featured on just 21 occasions across all competitions, returning three goals.

With the striker not featuring in Leeds’ plans ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, he was sent out on-loan to Blackburn Rovers, who he made 34 appearances for last season.

Antonsson returned eight goals for Blackburn, helping Tony Mowbray’s side to promotion in League One.

However, he’s not played his way back into Leeds’ plans under Marcelo Bielsa.

His last appearance for the Whites came back in January 2017, with it now looking likely that the Swedish forward will link up with Malmo.

The Verdict

It’s been a tough spell in English football for Antonsson, who hasn’t really adapted.

A move back to Sweden makes sense for all parties involved.

Antonsson can get his career back on track, whilst Leeds are offloading another body deemed surplus to requirements.
