Kemar Roofe is expected to negotiate a new Leeds United contract in the coming weeks, with uncertainty still hanging over the forward’s long-term future at Elland Road.

Leeds have allowed Roofe’s current deal at Elland Road to run down into its final 12 months, with the 26-year-old’s four-year deal he signed upon his arrival in West Yorkshire expiring in the summer of 2020.

And, off the back of his most prolific spell in the side at Leeds, he’s a man in-demand, with Football Insider reporting last month that Burnley were plotting a move for the former Oxford man.

Nevertheless, Leeds Live note that Roofe will be looking to negotiate a new contract with Leeds in the coming weeks, upon his and his teammates’ return to pre-season training.

In 110 Championship appearances for Leeds, Roofe has struck 28 league goals, plus an additional four in other competitions.

Last year under Marcelo Bielsa he scored 15 times, including a strike in the first-leg of the play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County.

Injuries plagued his season, though, and his last outing was in the Pride Park leg of the play-offs. Roofe missed the return leg as Leeds crashed out 4-3 on aggregate.

The Verdict

This is a massive deal that Leeds need to conclude over the course of the summer.

Roofe was a key part of the club’s success last season under Bielsa, with his 15 goals a high within the playing squad. The thought of him leaving on a free next season will disappoint the Elland Road faithful, and his current contract situation might force the club into a sale this summer should decent money go down.

That would leave a big void in Leeds’ squad, and there will be hope across the club that the Whites can negotiate a new deal with Roofe.
