Young Leeds United striker Mallik Wilks has opened up negotiations with the club with regards to a new contract, report Leeds Live

The news was announced by Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann who signed the striker on a six-month loan in the summer as he announced his interest in extending the striker's stay at the Keepmoat beyond January.

When asked if he had any interest in extending the current loan deals, McCann replied: "Yes - definitely on two of them.

“But, again, there are different things that we have to go through.

"Both Mallik and Herbie (Kane) are in the middle of sorting out new deals with their parent clubs."

Wilks has been on impressive form for Rovers this season scoring four goals and assisting three more in the opening 14 matches of the season.

It marks a noticeable improvement on last season when he spent the campaign in League Two with Accrington Stanley and Grimsby Town, scoring just three times in 25 matches across both spells.

The striker's contract is set to expire in January so it is likely that a new contract will be announced in the coming weeks.

The verdict

This seems like a very wise move from Leeds.

He is only 19 and has proven already to be a top striker in League One so there is a very good chance he will be a top Championship striker in the next few years if not higher.
