Redfearn has been with the club since 2009 in various roles but mostly working with the academy, and after briefs spells as caretaker manager of the first-team, he was given the job on a permanent basis in November last year.

But despite being under contract he was ousted on Wednesday as Cellino appointed former Brentford and Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler as Leeds' new head coach.

Cellino has not spoken to Redfearn since the end of the Italian's Football League ban on May 3 but newly-appointed executive director Adam Pearson has taken it upon himself to offer Redfearn his old job back as head of the academy.

The 49-year-old had a clause in his contract guaranteeing him that his previous role would be available if the Whites decided not to keep him on as head coach next season.

At the press conference to unveil Rosler, Pearson said: “Neil’s been offered the appointment back in charge of the academy and we await his answer. The role’s been offered to him and I’m sure he’ll come back to me as soon as he’s has time to think about it.”

Leeds were at the wrong end of the table midway through the season but their form in the second half of the season saw the club eventually finish 15th in the Championship.

Things began to go wrong when Redfearn's assistant, Steve Thompson, was suspended without any explanation.

Then there was the controversy over the withdrawal of six players through injury just 24 hours before Leeds' trip to Charlton Athletic in April.

The Leeds supporters gave their back to Redfearn and had chanted for Cellino to leave during the final matches of the season.

Cellino then accused Redfearn on Sunday of turning the fans against him and said he was a "weak character".

Pearson says the sour relationship between the Cellino and Redfearn would not affect his role as academy boss should the former Barnsley midfielder wish to return to his old job.
