He was one of the most controversial names in the history of English football, and Eric Cantona was so nearly an Owl.

The French maverick made his name with Leeds United and Manchester United as he established himself as one of the biggest names in Premier League history, but it could have been very different.

Cantona underwent a trial with Sheffield Wednesday with a view to completing a move to Trevor Francis's side in 1991, however that move fell through when the opportunity to head to Elland Road surfaced.

The rest for Cantona was history, but for Sheffield Wednesday it continues to be a story of 'what if'.

A picture of Eric Cantona was shared into a Sheffield Wednesday supporters group on Facebook and it certainly sparked a reaction amongst supporters who reacted in jest and intrigue.

Here's how some supporters reacted to the post on social media.

Samantha Leary: “Could have been a fantastic signing.”

Matthew Theobold: “A poor man’s Nigel Jemson.”
