Chris Wood’s 30 goals this season for Leeds United had fans dreaming of a Premier League return for the first time since 2004, as Garry Monk led the Whites to within touching distance of the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs.

Ultimately, Wood’s heroics were not enough to help Leeds finish inside the top-six, and after a late season collapse, Monk’s side finished seventh.

Changes will be required at Elland Road next season, particularly in attack, where Monk must look to bring somebody in to support Wood.

Marcus Antonsson is currently the only other natural striker at Elland Road, and the 26-year old endured a difficult first campaign in West Yorkshire, scoring on just three occasions.

According to the Express, Antonsson could be on his way out of Elland Road, just a year after his £2m arrival from Kalmar FF, which would leave Leeds in desperate need of recruiting another striker.

Antonsson arrived in Leeds and began pre-season training within a number of days, meaning he did not benefit from a break, due to his signing coinciding with the late end in the Swedish leagues.

During the early stages of the season, Antonsson replaced the struggling Wood in Leeds’ starting 11, initially impressing before his performances began to tire in the New Year.

Both Antonsson and Leeds will have a well-earned rest before returning for pre-season ahead of another massive campaign, something that will serve both parties well after an exhausting 12-months.

With two-years left on his contract at Elland Road and his early season impact there for everyone to see, it would be naïve to write Antonsson’s Leeds career off at the stage, particularly with the amount of football he played last year.

Next season it is vitally important someone can support Wood’s goals for Leeds, and Antonsson has showed glimpses that he could be that man – if his time at Elland Road was to come to a premature end, it would be a real shame.
