Leeds United have offered Pablo Hernandez a two-year contract extension, although it remains doubtful whether the Spaniard will commit his future to the Sky Bet Championship outfit.

Talks between Leeds and Hernandez have been going on a while now, with Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post confirming that the Whites had laid down the offer of a two-year deal, with the hope that the playmaker would stay.

However, the 33-year-old midfielder still might take up the option to return to Spain at the end of his current deal, as his family have moved back to their homeland.

Hernandez has been influential for Leeds this season in the Championship, proving to be a shining light in a dismal campaign at Elland Road.

The 33-year-old has scored nine goals across all competitions, adding a further eight assists.

Paul Heckingbottom is keen to tie Hernandez down, but a deal is complicated due to his wife’s pregnancy and return to Spain ahead of the summer.

Despite that, Hernandez has previously voiced his desire to win a new deal at Elland Road, telling the YEP that he is happy in Leeds and wants to stay.

The Verdict

It is good to see that Leeds have offered Hernandez a deal, particularly a two-year deal, as it is no more than the player deserves after a fine campaign.

Hernandez potentially returning to Spain is out of Leeds’ hands, and if the 33-year-old does decide to move away from England, the club will just have to accept his decision.

However, losing Hernandez at the end of the current campaign would be a huge blow for Leeds.
