Leeds United goalkeeper Rob Green has called for his younger teammates to see the fun side of the pressure in the club’s fight for promotion, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Back-to-back defeats for Garry Monk’s side, against promotion chasing Huddersfield Town and Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City looked to have dinted the optimism around Elland Road.

Monk’s side bounced back with a hard fought 2-1 win over Bristol City on Tuesday night, to steady Leeds’ hold on a Play-Off place.

Green put in an excellent performance against the Robins, and the former England ‘keeper spoke to the YEP about the looming pressure:

“It’s one of my roles as one of the senior members of the team to relieve the pressure and explain to the lads that this is fun pressure. This is nice pressure to play under.

“It’s a really good position to be in and while we’re desperately keen to take the chance, we really need to keep steady heads.”

The 37-year old has been in this position before, gaining promotion with three of his previous clubs, Norwich City, West Ham and QPR, Green continued:

“I’ve played in these run-ins a number of times.

“Games which shouldn’t be hard become hard and the games that should be hard don’t. It’s also about trying to alleviate the pressure from the players, the young lads.”

Tuesday’s victory at Elland Road, made sure Leeds remained fifth in the Sky Bet Championship, and even opened up a six-point gap to seventh placed Norwich, who dropped two-points with a draw against Newcastle United.

Chris Wood scored his 22nd goal of the campaign against Bristol, with a well-taken finish, and the New Zealand international will be going up against one of his former sides on Saturday.

Leeds travel to Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town, where they will be looking for back-to-back victories in the league for the first time since early February.
