Leeds United left-back Tom Pearce is set to complete a deadline day move to Wigan, with a medical scheduled this morning ahead of the transfer.

The 21-year-old had been expected to join Barnsley, with reporter Alan Nixon revealing on Twitter that the Tykes had agreed a fee for the youngster.

However, he explained last night that the Latics came in with a late bid and a deal should be finalised today.

"Wigan. Tom Pearce should happen. Cheap deal. Two left backs in one window. Medical next stage."

The England youth international has found opportunities hard to come by at Elland Road since Marcelo Bielsa was appointed, with the Argentinian sanctioning a loan to Scunthorpe for the player in January.

It became clear he would have to move on this summer if he wanted to play and he will now be fighting with another new recruit, Antonee Robinson, for the left-back role in Paul Cooks's side.

Providing this goes through, Pearce will hope to be involved as Wigan face Preston this weekend.

The Verdict

This is a surprising move as Pearce seemed set to join Barnsley but he has clearly had a better offer from Wigan.

And, the £275k fee mentioned would make him a real bargain so you can understand why there was additional interest in the player.

The only issue for Pearce at Wigan is that he will be competing with Robinson for a place in the team and after struggling to get game time in the past 18 months or so, you would have thought he wanted guaranteed minutes.

But, he will back himself to force his way into the XI and this could be a smart move in the long-term and Leeds are right to sell as they have another promising youngster in Leif Davis coming through.
