The 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season saw Leeds United surprisingly compete for promotion under Garry Monk, only to fall agonisingly short of reaching the play-offs after a late season collapse.

It appears that Leeds’ new owner, Andrea Radrizzani, is not wiling to waste the foundations that were built last season, and despite Monk quitting Elland Road for Middlesbrough, the club’s Italian owner seems ready to spend the money needed to get the Whites back to the top-flight.

Leeds’ supporters have been frustrated in recent transfer windows, as key players were sold, with no real money invested in the first-team from previous owners.

Massimo Cellino, Radrizzani’s predecessor, did spend money, most notably on last season’s top goalscorer Chris Wood, but Leeds’ new owner looks set to match the rest of the division with his transfer budget.

Leeds have already agreed to sign Pontus Jansson this summer, with the Swedish international costing the Whites a reported £3.5m, whilst money has also been spent elsewhere.

Hadi Sacko has been brought back to Elland Road permanently, and combined with Leeds’ most recent signing Mateusz Klich, Radrizzani’s summer spending has already exceeded the £5m mark, with still over two months of the transfer window remaining.

The Championship will be a competitive league next season, and there are no guarantees Thomas Christiansen, Leeds’ new head-coach, will be able to lead the club in a fight for promotion. However, it does appear that Radrizzani is willing to spend the money it takes to get the Whites back competing for a place in the Premier League.
