Leeds United linked with surprise move for former Watford man

Championship side Leeds United have been linked with a move for former Watford manager Walter Mazzarri, according to reports in Italy (via Sport Witness).

The Yorkshire outfit are on the lookout for a new head coach following the surprise resignation of Garry Monk on Thursday, with the 38-year-old having left after failing to agree a long-term contract extension with new owner Andrea Radrizzani.

This is all despite leading the club to a seventh place finish in the Championship last season, their best since 2011, yet their attentions are now turning to Monk’s successor, and one man who is reportedly in the frame is 55-year-old Mazzarri.

The Italian lost his job at Vicarage Road last week despite leading the Hornets to a 17th place finish in the Premier League, six points clear of the bottom three.

However, reported discontent in the dressing room amongst other things led to the Watford hierarchy parting company with Mazzarri, and the Italian links with new Leeds owner Radrizzani makes this a potentially viable option.

Nonetheless, it’s not just Leeds who are lining up Mazzarri, as reports suggest that Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne are also interested, so it very much remains to be seen if the 55-year-old is in the Elland Road dugout come August as the Leeds boss.
