According to the Sun’s Football League writer, Tom Barclay, Leeds United are interested in signing Vurnon Anita, who has recently left Newcastle United.

Anita’s five-year association with Newcastle came to an end following the 2016/17 campaign, with the Magpies opting not to renew the Dutchman’s contract at St James’ Park.

Reports now suggest that Leeds, who are preparing for another push at promotion in the Sky Bet Championship, are interested in taking the free agent to Elland Road following his release from Newcastle.

Anita, 28, can play at both right-back and in central midfield and would provide Thomas Christiansen with a useful option heading into the 2017/18 campaign.

During his five-years at Newcastle, Anita made over 100 league appearances for the Magpies, with the majority of those coming in the top-flight.

The 28-year old opted to stick with Newcastle following their relegation to the Championship in 2016, and played a significant role in helping Rafa Benitez’s side win the Championship last season, making 27 appearances.

And the versatile Dutchman could now be set for another season in the second-tier.

Christiansen has hinted that there will be more arrivals at Elland Road before that start of the Championship season, with Leeds keen to add to the four players signed already.

Hadi Sacko, Mateusz Klich, Madger Gomes and Felix Wiedwald have all arrived at Elland Road so far this summer.
