Leeds United line up transfer swoop for 6-goal striker as Eddie Nketiah’s replacement

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a transfer swoop for Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga according to The Mirror.

It’s no secret that the Whites are in the market for a striker this month, with Marcelo Bielsa being desperately short on senior options in attack.

Arsenal recently recalled Eddie Nketiah from his loan spell at Elland Road, which leaves Leeds with just Patrick Bamford as their recognised striking option.

Nketiah made just two league starts for the Whites in his time with the club, and it came as no surprise to see Arsenal recall him from his loan spell at Elland Road.

Leeds have struggled in recent weeks, and haven’t scored in their last three league games which has seen the promotion-chasing pack close in on the Yorkshire-based side.

Assombalonga is currently sidelined through injury, but has scored six goals in 21 appearances for Middlesbrough in the first-half of this year’s campaign.

He scored 16 goals for Boro in the Championship last term, and will be hoping he can get back to his best when he does return from a spell in the treatment room.

That could be with Leeds as well, with the report from The Mirror claiming that the Whites are targeting a move for the striker before they return to action later this month.

Leeds are next in action on 28th January, when they take on play-off chasing Millwall in what could potentially be a tricky test for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Who is United's current number 9?

The Verdict:

I’m not sure he’s the right player that they need.

Assombalonga is currently injured, and I have my doubts as to whether he would suit Marcelo Bielsa’s high-intensity style of play if he was to arrive at Elland Road.

He wouldn’t be a very cost-effective signing either, and I think there are better options out there for the Whites as they look to find their Eddie Nketiah replacement.

On the other hand, he does have a proven goal record in the Championship, having scored 16 goals for Middlesbrough last season, and if you’re looking at it in terms of goals, he’s good enough to challenge Bamford for his starting spot.
