Leeds United legend, Peter Lorimer, has called for Billy Sharp to improve his form and start grabbing more goals for United.

Sharp is set to have a medical at Sheffield United

Writing in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Lorimer said "Billy hasn’t played too regularly, I don’t think his performances have been great either."

Sharp netted the winner at Huddersfield on Saturday with a 90th minute header, his third goal since moving to Elland Road last summer. In celebration, Sharp ran to the away fans and jumped in with them.

"It was late and it was dramatic," said Lorimer, "but his celebration told us something about how long it’s been since he had that feeling – and how badly he’s missed it."

A former forward himself, Lorimer knows the jubilant feeling of scoring a late, match-winning, goal but he also understands the pressure of being the one that has to perform every week.

"Billy could be the best player on the pitch for 46 league games but if he finishes the season with a handful of goals, he’ll be judged on that tally and he’ll be judged harshly."

Sharp's goal-scoring record in the Championship is an enviable one, 73 goals for six different clubs. It is evident that the quality and goal-scoring instinct is within the Yorkshireman, who was linked with a move to Ipswich in the January window, which he snubbed to fight for his place at Leeds.

Lorimer compared Sharp's situation to that of Steve Morrison's. "Earlier in the season it looked to me like Morison had no future at Leeds United," he said, "But a chance came his way and he’s taken it with both hands."

The winner against Huddersfield could yet earn Sharp a place in the line up for United's next game, when they host Brentford on Saturday, and Lorimer has demanded that he uses the Hudderfield goal to get his form back: "he’s got to grasp it. He’s got to follow up his goal at Huddersfield with another against Brentford."

Leeds United lost 1-0 to Brentford at Elland Road on Saturday, which subsequently leaves Neil Redfearn's side in 20th position in the Sky Bet Championship.
