Leeds United have shared photos on their official Twitter account of their famous 4-1 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the 2002 UEFA Cup 2nd Round, in a match in which Alan Smith grabbed all four goals for the Whites.

In what was one of the greatest European nights in club history, English forward Smith tore apart the Israeli defence, firing the Whites through to the next round, where they fell to Spanish side Malaga.

Leeds fans will one day hope to see European football return to Elland Road, but could be waiting some time if Thomas Christiansen’s side fail to emerge from the abysmal run of form they currently find themselves in.

The Dane’s side have lost seven of their last nine league fixtures, and memories of that famous night under the lights in Israel will provide Leeds fans with a stark contrast to their current situation in England’s second tier.

The Verdict

Once a proud Premier League club with regular European adventures, Leeds’ struggles in the Football League will be a huge disappointment to fans.

That night in Israel will be remembered fondly by fans, despite Alan Smith, who left the club for Manchester United, sparking uproar, scoring all four goals for the club.

The good times may one day return to Elland Road, but it is going to take a big turnaround this year if the club can go one step closer to a European return, and get themselves back into the Premier League.
