Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United are in talks with German second-division outfit Stuttgart over the possible transfer of midfielder Alexandru Maxim to Elland Road - reports German outlet Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

Garry Monk was in contact with the 27 year-old before Christmas as the manager looks to strengthen his side, ahead of what looks like will be an intense end to the season in the race for promotion.

Maxim has 27 caps for Romania but failed to make his country's final squad for the European Championship's this season.

The attack-minded player began his career at Espanyol before moving in 2011 to his native homeland as he signed for Pandurii Târgu Jiu.

Two years there were followed by a move to Germany when he joined Stuttgart on a four-and-a-half-year contract in 2013.

Alexandru Maxim has made 18 appearances for his team this season and has seemingly impressed Leeds United boss Garry Monk.

Monk's main transfer priority this window is a striker and West Ham United forward Ashley Fletcher is his prime target.
