Leeds United are said to be in a race against time to tie down youngster Oliver Casey to a new deal according to Football Insider.

Casey's current deal with the Yorkshire-based club is due to expire in June, and it remains to be seen as to whether Leeds have made any progress in their talks with the 19-year-old.

The defender made his first-team debut this season as a substitute against Huddersfield Town in December before the EFL break impacted fixtures.

Leeds currently find themselves sat top of the Championship table, and will be keen to hold their nerve in the race for promotion when football returns.

Due to recent events, all fixtures across the UK have been postponed, with player's across the country continuing their training regimes at home.

This means that Leeds will have to try and negotiate a new deal with Casey during the 'lockdown', which has impacted both clubs and members of the public.

It's far from ideal circumstances for both parties involved, but Leeds will be hoping to get an agreement in place at the earliest of opportunities, before any other potential interested parties can enter talks with the defender.

The Verdict:

They need to get this sorted during the break from competitive action.

Casey isn't a key member of Marcelo Bielsa's squad yet, but he's been a solid option to have for the Whites when called upon by the Argentine this term.

I think he's got a future at Leeds United, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him head out on loan next season, especially if the Whites are to win promotion into the Premier League this season.

If that was to happen, then Casey would be pushed down the pecking order in Marcelo Bielsa's plans as they prepare for life in the top-flight.

The club should offer him a new deal in the near future though, as I think he's a more than good enough option to have in and around the first-team squad in the future.
